Abstract

This study analyzes urban-rural variations in Philippine household size and components of household size, as well as the relative contribution of these components to household size. The areas included in the study are Manila, the Philippine primate city, urban areas outside Manila, and rural areas. A separate analysis considers urban-rural differentials in household size and structure in two Muslim provinces in the southern Philippines. Household size is larger in urban than in rural areas and the difference largely reflects the presence of extended family members and nonrelatives. However, the nuclear family is the dominant form of residential arrangement.
