Abstract

It is very important to select hub nodes or key junctions before urban traffic signal control system (SCOOT or SCATS) divides control sub-areas. Usually, traffic flow and link numbers are used as indexes to find out which hub nodes are in urban traffic network. However, these indexes could not reflect the traffic network topology characteristics like free scale features which are very helpful to protect the effectiveness of regional traffic signal control system under ‘intentional attack’ of traffic incidents. In this paper, new method of node importance analysis, hub node selection and application of urban traffic complex network is discussed. Firstly, urban traffic network is abstracted as weighted complex traffic network using junction as node and travel expense (travel time) as link weight. Secondly, using network cohesion as index, weighted node contraction method is applied to evaluate the importance of node and effective results are shown applying it on simulation network. Finally, based on hub node selection, SCATS system optimization strategies are also illustrated.
