Abstract

The modern-day urban development requires a sustainable solution to the problems emerging from the extension of cities’ limits. Across the world, governments have identified smart cities as possible solutions to these problems. There are various aspects of a smart city that are considered imperative for a sustainable future. This chapter links vital aspects related to urban spaces with which are critical in development of a city which is eco-friendly and is technology driven. These urban spaces which are technologically innovative make a city “smart and sustainable” and hence need attention from local governing bodies and federal governments. This chapter also reveals the challenges of smart cities related to overpopulation, governance, and diffusion of technology into various city domains. This study, hence, provides a future pathway, which is important in development of smart cities. The findings of this study contribute to the existing understanding towards growth of urban spaces in smart cities by providing insights and also by drawing attention towards the role of urban spaces in the development of environment friendly and technologically advanced urban human habitat.
