Abstract

In the1960s and 1980s, sugar and pasta factories (Eridania and Barilla) were closed in Parma because of the change in the economic structure, and these factory sites were devastated. In the 1997, Parma began to revitalize the disused factory sites and an old sugar factory was preserved and regenerated into a music hall. The case of the Ex Eridania-Barilla is a pioneer in the preservation and utilization of industrial heritage in Italy. This paper reports on the background, systems, and methods of preservation and utilization of this project, which became a turning point in Parma’s urban policy.
