Abstract

Abstract This paper considers the various purposes of urban renewal and suggests that continuously collected data could facilitate renewal decisions. Investment flows among parts of the city's physical plant produce two kinds of blight: an “interdependence” type, and a demand type. The complex character of physical blight means that specifying appropriate objectives of public policy is neither simple nor obvious. Furthermore, many public and private groups have legitimate stages in renewal decisions. A systematic regional information system could provide information flows and analyses to support the difficult public-private decisions which characterize the urban renewal process.
