The principal concern among the coalition that supported Larrachea’s candidacy when it was announced was that she would be defeated by her most likely main opponent, Conservative Joaquin Lavin, who had narrowly lost to Lagos in the national election. This would leave the president in the awkward position of having to collaborate with his leading rival in the governance of the nation’s capital—which, indeed, is exactly what happened. 4. Marin received only a little more than 3% of the vote in the first round of balloting in 1999.
