Abstract

This paper describes the approach taken in attempting to deal with the problems of urban conservation in the Andalucían town of Antequera. The methodology adopted in formulating a Special Plan bears a close resemblance to that advocated by M.R.G. Conzen in identifying distinctive spatial units as the starting point for the future management of the townscape, based on plan elements, building types and land use. However, amongst the problems that will be encountered in implementing the Plan are the intense pressure for retail change in central but historic areas, the modernization of traditional housing in residential areas and, in the absence of a significant tourist industry, the limited perceived value of the townscape as a resource in itself.
