Abstract

Summary Ohio has had a long and illustrious history since it became the first Chapter of the National Shade Tree Conference (later known as the International Society of Arboriculture) in 1942. Since then it has continued to be recognised as one of the true leaders in arboriculture and urban forestry in the United States. The factors responsible for Ohio's recent success is the development of its ‘Urban Forestry Assistance Program’, an increased number of TREE CITY USA awards to communities committed to the long term management of their urban forest resource, an increased number of educational institutions which have included urban forestry and arboriculture in their curricula, increased grants from the federal government, expanded and enhanced availability of arboricultural consultancies and an increase in the number of certified (qualified) arborists trained to assist communities in the management of their urban forests.
