Abstract
Since the development of technology, people have been able to connect in many ways. However, since data is limited, traditional research on urban dynamics has relied on theoretical modeling, such as cellular automata, which displays the urban dynamics through simulation. To substantially capture the characteristics of urban dynamics, we selected four fundamental aspects to review recent developments. The first is the urban population dynamics; the second is the urban land dynamics; the third is the interaction and networking in urban areas, which can be seen as the mechanism of urban dynamics; and the fourth is simulation modeling of urban dynamics. To improve understanding of the common and specific properties of urban dynamics, more methods relating to urban big data should be developed. Exchanges between theoretical studies, empirical studies and simulations should promote progress in this new field.
