Abstract
The research Urban design of Slovenian towns: Protection and future development includes 91 urban centres. Their town- scapes are inventoried, evaluated and planned in terms of proposals. The urban design of each town is described and drawn on the scale 1: 25 000 or 1:10 000. An attempt of typological classification of Slovenian towns based on visual identity was made. This research is far beyond the evaluations of historical centres, because it shows the present situation: the images of the cities are changed because of suburbanisation, new industrial zones, traffic corridors, functionalistic housing developments, high-rise buildings, because of commercialisation, etc. Our proposals are based on principles of ecological planning, reurbanisation, humanisation, continuity, context and identity of our towns.
