Abstract

Renewed interest in cycling as a mode of transport has been paralleled by a TRRL research programme on urban cycle routes. After studying cycle routes in Portsmouth, Peterborough and Middlesborough, research has been concentrated on separate facilities which can form sections of cycle routes. Current research described covers contra-flow lanes, ways of aiding cyclists in the negotiation of roundabouts, the conversion of footways to shared cyclist/pedestrian use, statistical studies of cycle use, and accidents involving cyclists. Further studies are likely in such areas as the determination of standards for cycle routes, junction design, cycling in pedestrian areas and parking facilities. Experiments described have shown that it is possible to lay down cycle routes through established built-up areas. (Author/TRRL)
