Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the determinants of urban primacy which is of immediate interest from a policy standpoint. The plan of the article is as follows: first previous work on the question of primacy and its determinants is reviewed; second the causative factors and the processes that are viewed as being behind the primacy phenomena are discussed and operationalized; and third an empirical cross-country test of hypotheses on the determinants of primacy and urban concentration are conducted. The data are from a variety of published sources including the World Bank and are for 95 countries. (EXCERPT)
