Abstract

Over extensive areas of America, Native people lived urbanized lives for thousands of years. The majority of American Indians (78%) are currently urban residents. Urban American Indians challenge inaccurate ideas that American Indians only exist in the past, and only reside on reservations. Urban American Indian identity is based on multigenerational urban Indian families and communities, with a strong base of American Indian non-profit institutions that support cultural and social needs.
