Abstract
Nuclear fuel making is a new and still not-too-large addition to the chemical industry. But fuel producers are optimistic, look more to future needs than to current requirements. Uranium dioride is the most popular nuclear fuel today, and will probably stuy in first place for some time. Mallinokrodt Nuclear was the first commercial UO/sub 2/ producer. At its Heruatite, Mo., plant, the firm makes UO/sub 2/ by first reacting uranium hexafluoride with aqueous ammonia to obtain ammonium diuranate (ADU). This compound is then dried, reduced to UO/ sub 2/, and the dioxide worked mechanically into a variety of shapes and sizes. (auth)
