Abstract

Many mines in the Witwatersrand basin are located at the outcrop of the auriferous ore, right on the watersheds of drainage basins. This resulted in the concentration of waste deposits in sensitive headwater regions of streams. With falling prices for uranium (U) the recovery of this commodity virtually stopped increasing the U-levels in active slimes dams. The following questions are addressed: Is U transported from slimes dams into the environment? To what extent are aquifers and adjacent streams affected? What are the main transport mechanisms and are there common patterns of contamination discernable?
