Abstract

This thesis examines the life and work of the Queensland architect, Philip Oliver Ellard Hawkes, 1882 - 1961, with particular emphasis on his practice in the Wide Bay and Burnett District from 1910 to 1940. It outlines his family background, architectural education and career to 1940 and includes a catalogue of all work identifed. It examines the differences that occur between the archi tectur a 1 prof essi on af the early 1900 ' s a.nd today. It records and studies the? amount and type of work done by Philip Hawkes, and looks at how economic fluctuations affected his work. An examination is made into the style and characteristics of Hawkes' buildings and the development of his architectural style. No collection of records relating to Hawkes remains. Major sources for this thesis have been the Maryborough Chronicle, which wais indexed from July 1918 to February 1940; Mrs. Lorraine Chester - the daughter of P.O.E. Hawkes; annual records of the Queensland Department of Works held at the State Archives; records of the Board of Architects of Queensland, and published sources.
