Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is commonly used during cardiac valve surgery to assess valve function prior to and following repair/replacement and to manage complications. In a matched cohort study including more than 850,000 patients in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons database, use of intraoperative TEE was associated with lower 30-day mortality after open cardiac valve or proximal aortic surgery compared with not using TEE [1].
