Abstract

Background Neonatal mortality is a major public health concern in low- and middle- income countries. Tanzania is among the top three countries with highest neonatal mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Tanzania, decrease in neonatal mortality has been observed for years. In 1992 Tanzania had NMR of 38 per 1000 live births with decrease to 20,1 per 1000 in 2020. The aim is to reduce neonatal mortality to below 12 per 1000 live births by 2030. The slow decline of neonatal mortality is likely due to human resource crisis and shortage of skilled Health care workers among other reasons.
