Abstract

SummaryMature red cells take up iron not bound to transferrin when they are incubated with plasma in vitro. The iron is not incorporated into haemoglobin, but is probably attached to stromal iron acceptors. Red cells from blood with saturated transferrin have more iron‐acceptor sites occupied than have red cells from blood with unsaturated transferrin.
