Abstract

Purpose - This study comprehensively analyzes the telecommunication market in Bangladesh, focusing on its historical and current growth patterns, the challenges encountered by service providers, and the effects on customers in terms of access, affordability, and service quality. The research also recommends strategies and policy options to enhance the telecommunication market in Bangladesh.
Design/Methodology/Approach - Our research methodology is a combination of surveys and observations. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect data on the current state of the telecommunication market and its impact on customers. We utilized convenience sampling to select 101 participants representing diverse regions of Bangladesh, including both prepaid and postpaid mobile and internet users. The survey employed open-ended and closed-ended questions, covering topics such as service costs, network coverage, service quality, and the influence of telecommunication services on daily life. Data collection methods included online distribution, in-person interviews, and in-depth observations involving key telecommunication market stakeholders.
Findings - While the research unveiled notable revenue growth, subscriber base expansion, and technological advancements in the Bangladesh telecommunication market, it also revealed customer challenges, particularly in rural areas, related to access, affordability, and service quality. Recommendations for market improvement encompass expanding network coverage in underserved regions, reducing taxes and fees, and promoting the use of affordable smartphones to boost internet penetration and digital literacy.
Research Implications - The insights derived from this research hold significant value for policymakers, telecommunication service providers, and stakeholders regarding the challenges faced by the Bangladesh telecommunication market. This study is instrumental in enhancing the telecommunication market’s role in Bangladesh’s economic and social development.
