Abstract

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease in adults and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. There is no cure for OA primarily due to a poor understanding of the disease pathogenesis. Mitochondria are extremely dynamic cellular organelles that undergo fission and fusion events on a regular basis (referred to as mitochondrial dynamics), which affects their shape, size, distribution, function, and is tightly controlled by numerous fission and fusion factors such as Dynamin Related Protein 1 (DRP1).
