Abstract

Seismic waves from the underground nuclear test ``Serena`` were recorded by a linear array of nine seismographs spaced more or less regularly from near the Nevada Test Site to Carrizozo, New Mexico. The authors have obtained Rayleigh wave group and phase velocity data from these stations, and have inverted the phase velocity data for models of the upper crust of the southern Colorado Plateau and the Rio Grande rift. The major difference between the two models is the thickness of their sedimentary sections, with the model for the rift having 2.65 km of sediments, and the model for the Colorado Plateau having 0.65 km. There is no substantial difference between the two models below 2.65 km, which have upper-crustal shear-wave velocities of 3.66 km/sec (Colorado Plateau) and 3.60 km/sec (Rio Grande rift) to a depth of 23.65 km.
