Abstract Using the Arecibo 305 m telescope and a circularly polarized feed, the C166-alpha lines were observed toward four C II regions associated with W48, S87, S88B, and M78. These sources were chosen for observations due to their strong, narrow carbon radio recombination lines. Using the Zeeman effect and the observed left and right circularly polarized components of the carbon lines, upper limits of a milligauss were set for the line-of-sight magnetic fields in C II regions. If the interstellar magnetic field scales with gas density n according to an n-to-the-alpha-power law, these results require alpha to be less than 2/3.
