Abstract

An upper limit of 200 photons cm-2 -1 is given for La emission from the Coma cluster of galaxies. This, in conjunction with previous measurements at X-ray and radio wavelengths, effectively rules out models in which the cluster is bound by an ionized intracluster gas. Our data can also be used to set crude but model-independent limits on q0 based on the accretion of intergalactic gas into the cluster. Subject headings: galaxies, clusters of - intergalactic medium
