Abstract

Extraordinary mode scattering spectra in the vicinity of upper hybrid resonance are calculated for an infinitely long, radially inhomogenous, magnetoplasma column. The wave fields are determined inside the plasma column by a numerical solution of the full set of Maxwell's equations. The results indicate that enhanced scattering is limited to the range of upper hybrid frequencies of the column, that the shape of the resonance spectrum is strongly dependent on the shape of the density profile, and that the presence of a glass sleeve about the plasma column can completely change the shape of the resonance spectrum. Experimental scattering spectra and density profile measurements have been obtained from a thermally ionized potassium plasma column enclosed in a Pyrex tube and shunting a section of waveguide. The profile was measured with Langmuir probes. The spectrum predicted by the modified profile was found to be in very good agreement with an experimental spectrum obtained while the density measurements were being made.
