Abstract

Following detailed investigation of the White Chalk of the Anglo-Paris Basin (Mortimore & Pomerol, 1987) and critical discussion papers ( e.g. Gale, Wood & Bromley, 1987) it is possible to rationalise more clearly the status of the lithological units recognised (Formations, Members etc.), and also comment on the names used to identify the units. The key issues are: (i) the need for a standard ‘Basin’ lithostratigraphy; (ii) the need to identify those field sections which most clearly illustrate that ‘Basin’ stratigraphy; (iii) the need to identify the key marker bands that most easily define the boundaries to the broader lithological units in the standard ‘Basin’ lithostratigraphy; (iv) the need to identify units which have local status only.
