Abstract

In the emergency department, the assessment and management of respiratory distress begins with an evaluation of the upper airway. Even with vaccines and potent antimicrobials, airway obstruction can result from infections of the upper airway. Timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment are key to prevent potentially serious complications. We present several cases involving bacterial infections of the supraglottic, glottie, and subglottic portions of the airway.
