Abstract

This paper compares the effectiveness of space and polarization diversity in the up-link of cellular communication systems with many hand-held terminals users. According to our experiments, when the transmitter was a hand-held terminal being attached to one of the ears, polarization diversity was found far more effective than space diversity, especially in line-of-sight areas. This is because the hand-held terminal is almost always held in an inclined position rather than the vertical. The effect of the human body is also considered to be contributing to this phenomenon. We conclude that polarization diversity is very effective for the cellular communication systems.
