Abstract

Structures such as transmission towers and mooring systems for ocean surface or submerged platforms with pile foundations are subjected to uplifting forces. A limited amount of work is found in literature regarding the theoretical analysis and experimental determination of the uplift capacity of pile foundations in granular and cohesive soils. In a previous paper, two of the writers presented some experimental results for the vertical uplift capacity of rough model piles in loose granular soil. The present study is an extension of the aforementioned work to report some recent model test results for the resistance of rigid rough vertical piles subjected to oblique uplifting load in loose sand. A limited number of test results for similar type tests in dense sand have been reported by Meyerhof.
