Abstract

The reported anomalous “up-hill” diffusion of hydrogen in PdPt and PdAg alloys is explained in terms of attractive, long-range, non-local, elastic interactions between dissolved hydrogen atoms. A statistical model based on the continuum elasticity theory is presented, and model calculations for the Pd 81Pt 19 system are shown to give results that are in semi-quantitative agreement with experimental data.
