Abstract
Based on 5 years of clinical practice and health-based research in Sierra Leone between 1966–1985, this paper overviews programmes for maternal/child care and midwifery upgrading which have emerged as part of primary health care. Special attention is given to the training of Traditional Birth Attendants in the Koinadugu District.
