Abstract

The VICKSI control system is based on a single computer and limitations have become evident. Although the internal design has not lost any of its attraction and can still compete with other, more recent implementations, a shortage of processing power because of the increasingly extensive use of the control system by different groups has become evident. In addition, the man-machine interface is obsolete. The major part of the upgrade is to move to a computer network to decentralize the access capabilities and to make the system extensible with respect to processing power.
