Abstract

The RUSI Library has been an integral part of the Institute since its foundation in 1831. Since then it has developed a unique collection of books on military science and history. As the Library is an important resource, both to RUSI member's and the wider public, it was decided in the early 1990s that measures should be taken to secure its treasures. The Library received a face lift in 1991 when the whole of the RUSI Whitehall premises were restored to their former glory. This recreated the original Victorian look of the Library which resembles closely the original design of 1893. However, as John Montgomery explains, work needs to be done now to save the Library's holdings. Many of the older books are falling apart and repairs and conservation work is badly needed. Generous grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Pilgrim Trust and the British Library will ensure that the restoration will continue while also ensuring that the Library will be computerised to meet the requirements of the Institute's users into the 21st century.
