Abstract

Renato Saltz, MD, Salt Lake City, UT , is a board-certified plastic surgeon and an ASAPS member. The technology has advanced rapidly since I reviewed the application of tissue sealants in this column 2 years ago.1,2 In that short time span, tissue sealants have found new applications in plastic surgery. These include optimal, local hemostasis with sealing of autologous implants and large bleeding surfaces, and the repair of autologous cartilage and bone implants in nasal surgery. Fibrin has been applied in peripheral nerve repair, both as a pathway for regeneration and as a matrix for gap healing in silicon conduits. Clinically, no difference in efficacy has been observed when compared to sutures, although the use of sealants reduces operative time and facilitates nerve sprouting across junction interfaces.
