Abstract

Fungal species are currently undergoing extensive reclassification, resulting in name changes to medically important species. This is largely due to 2011 changes to the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (ICN), where the provision for fungi to have multiple valid names for anamorph and teleomorph forms was removed; expert groups are determining the most appropriate names to preserve. In addition, the widespread availability of molecular technologies in the past decade has improved phylogenetic studies, which in turn have redefined species concepts and some species have been realigned into related genera. Recent clinically relevant nomenclature changes will be discussed.
