Until recently, the care of the patient who had had a stroke was often limited to getting the patient to an emergency department, obtaining a computed tomographic scan to rule out a hemorrhage, initiating heparin therapy, and observing the patient. Not much more was available until rehabilitation began. This strategy is no longer acceptable. Because of recent advances, more strokes can be prevented and patients can be treated more effectively than in the past.Other recent neurologic advances include new drug therapy for epilepsy, ...
