Abstract

The up-conversion and near-infrared emission of the Er 3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing LaF 3 nanocrystals have been investigated. The formation of LaF 3 nanocrystals in the glass was confirmed by XRD. The up-conversion emission of Er 3+ ions in the glass ceramics can be observed to be much stronger than that in the glasses, and the transition mechanism of the up-conversion emission can be ascribed to two photons absorption process. The split near-infrared emission peaks of the Er 3+ ions in the glass-ceramics can be observed because the Er 3+ ions have entered into crystalline environment of the LaF 3 nanocrystals.
