Abstract

Children suffering from chronic constipation may develop megarectum, in which faeces accumulate on reaching the rectum, resulting in an enlarged and dilated rectum.Until recently, there has been no easy way to diagnose or monitor megarectum in children. Nicola Watson explains the work of a team of professionals at Nottingham University Hospital into the use of portable ultrasound to overcome the restrictions of previous techniques; this modality has now been established as an important tool in helping nurse practitioners manage this condition.
