Abstract
Unusual unilateral changes involving the incudomalleal articular disk were found in a 57-year-old, mentally retarded woman. No clinical evidence of arthritis was noted. The incudomalleal joint demonstrated proliferation of synovial tissue which replaced large portions of the articular disk. Alteration of disk substance was also demonstrated with special stains, suggesting the presence of "fibrinoid" material. These changes progressed to replacement of portions of articular disk by vascular fibrous connective tissue. Whether the lesion represents an atypical form of degenerative arthritis or a nondegenerative arthritis is undetermined.
