Abstract

Two unusual fumaric acid acylated peonidin-3-monoglucosides were fractionated and purified from the skins of the Koshu grape, native to Japan, as minor anthocyanin pigments. The differentiation of Koshu from <i>Vitis vinifera</i> and American species is discussed. Diglucoside pigments are absent; therefore, Koshu cannot be directly derived from <i>V. labrusca</i> or other American species or <i>V. amurensis</i>. The pigments are, nevertheless, different from those reported for <i>V. vinifera</i>.
