Unusual Facial Mutilation Due to Rhinoentomophthoromycosis

Abstract

Rhinoentomophthoromycosis caused by Entomophthorales is a rare, chronic, granulomatous disease, occurring mainly in tropical areas, particularly in Central America, equatorial Africa, and Southeast Asia, especially India. It commonly presents as a chronic granulomatous lesion that affects the rhinofacial subcutaneous tissue. We present 3 cases of rhinoentomophthoromycosis. This rare disease produced unusual woody progressive deformity of the nose and upper lip in the first case, whereas it produced deformity of the left cheek as well as lower eyelid in the second case and third case respectively. To our knowledge, these are the first such unusual cases of gross facial, particularly labial mutilation to be reported from Nigeria. We also discuss the presentation and management of entomophthoromycosis.
