Abstract

Movement and flexibility are characteristics of the modern (modern?) communication society. Open spaces are the medium of societies' manifold activites. In the city, the synonym of everlasting movement, perception of space and communication is more fragmentary and selective. The best quality of life will more and more be concentrated in the historical centres. At the same time, the urban fringes are evolving into localities of “planned informality”. Urban experts, including architects, theorise about this system of “informality” using the catch phrase “Zwischenstadt”—neither land nor city—as products of the modern/post-modern urban expansion. Landscape architects are fond of talking about city landscapes. The industrial area of the northern outskirts of Milan has such special places, only known by a few.
