Abstract

Cobaltocene reacts very smoothly with benzyl, allyl, and propargyl halides (bromides, iodides, and with some limitations chlorides) to form cyclopentadienyl(1- exo-organylcyclopentadiene)cobalt complexes. Thus, with benzyl chloride, benzyl bromide, trans-3-bromo-1-phenylpropene, and 3-bromo-1-phenylpropyne the new 1- exo-benzyl, 1- exo-( trans-3-phenylallyl), and 1- exo-(3-phenylpropargyl) derivatives of cyclopentadienyl(cyclopentadiene)cobalt are obtained. For this reaction a two step radical mechanism is discussed. The constitution of the new compounds is derived from their IR and mass spectra.
