Abstract

Summary In a serological comparison between 389 isolates of maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) by means of precipitin drop test, latex test and ELISA, respectively, we could find out two serologically different serogroups. Heterologous reactions between the representatives of both groups couldn’t be observed using latex test as well as ELISA. In order to rule out false conclusions it should be used mixed sera for routine diagnosis. In the summer of 1985, maize crops grown in the vicinity of Halle and Leipzig, respectively were inspected for the occurence of the both serogroups. In 12 cases we could ascertain mixed populations. The portion of representatives of the serogroup 1 varied from crop to crop between 6 and 75 %. In three crops only representation of the serogroup 2 existend. Further experiments will have to be carried out in order to group the several isolates to well-defined strains of MDMV and sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), respectively.
