Abstract
Studies on the sycamore lace bug,Corythuca ciliata (Say), a new pest in Europe Introduced from North America, the new insect pest, the sycamore lace bug(Corythuca ciliata Say), has been discovered in Italy and, more recently, in Yugoslavia. In view of the fact that this bug can easily be carried over considerable distances and may consequently have spread to other countries as well, the article gives a description of the bug's individual development stages, its spread, its hosts and destructive effects, and the results of investigations of its biology. The results of investigations regarding the control of the pest are to be presented in a separate paper. Because of the obviously good possibilities for the acclimatization of this bug in Europe, its rapid spread, increasing population rate and great harmfulness, and also in view of the importance of plane trees as part of the urban vegetation and the most frequent type of tree lining roads in many parts of Europe, it is necessary to try and establish the spread of this insect pest and try to bring it under control especially by biological means.
