Abstract

The article deals with the so-called 30th Waffen-Grenadier Division of SS known also as Russian No. 2. This division consisted of former armed collaborators who had left Byelorussia in the summer of 1944 together with Germans. The article not only depicts the fighting activities of the division at the western front at the second half of 1944 but also reconstructs as far as possible the inner atmosphere in this unit and the relations between German personnel and Byelorussian “Waffen-Grenadiers.” The admitting of those who only a couple years ago were seen as “subhuman” into the rows of Waffen-SS did not mean the disappearance of anti-Slavic stereotypes on the part of Germans. Rather, the attitude on the part of the latter toward their new “comrades-in-arms” remained till the very end the mixture of racial dogmatism and utilitarianism.
