Abstract

The goal of the Prime Minister's Commission (2009) on the future of nursing and midwifery is to fulfil the potential of nurses and midwives so that families and communities achieve the best possible health and wellbeing. Its vision is that nurses and midwives will be central to a number of aspects of health care, including health-care delivery, leadership, research, education, service design and management, and policy making. The aim is for nurses and midwives, which are professions ‘rooted in compassion’, to deliver services locally, providing high-quality physical and psychological health, and for them to be valued members of the community.
