Abstract

Some metal-melting induction furnaces suffer refractory failure through cracking during the cooling period that follows steel discharge. A mathematical model to predict the unsteady-state temperature distribution of a furnace of this type during cooling is presented in this work. The importance of several parameters is pointed out. A finite-difference scheme is employed to solve the heat-transfer equations.
