Abstract

The drainage of soils overlying semi-confined aquifers is a very complicated problem. We examine the case where the vertical leakage from the semi-confined aquifer is expressed as a function of the water table height and the replenishment owing to irrigation or rainfall as well as the drainage base, that is the water level at the field drains, are considered to vary exponentially with time. In this paper analytical solutions of the non-homogeneous Boussinesq equation obtained under the aforementioned conditions are presented and compared with numerical solutions. Some non-dimensional diagrams, obtained from the analytical solutions, are also presented, that can be used for easy calculations in solving practical problems and to show the effect of various sets of parameter values.
