Abstract

To explain the influence of cavitation type on cavity breakdowns under violent vibrations around a cavitating hydrofoil, the lift and drag fluctuations, accelerations and corresponding cavitation aspects are investigated in the flow around an Eppler hydrofoil for various incidences, in which several types of cavitation, ie, the attached cavity, the travelling bubble and the mixed type, take place. It is found that a large difference in the lift fluctuations emerges between them. The lift fluctuations for the attached cavity case reach about 20% of the mean value in amplitude which is larger than that of the mixed type, followed by that of the travelling type.
